I recently worked with a patient that tore his meniscus during a training session.
He had surgery, went to traditional PT, and never got back to full depth squats.
His PT told him, “you shouldn’t squat heavy ever again.” He was discharged from PT and struggled to get back to his previous training.
He approached me months later stating he was still having pain in the gym.
Guess what we did for his rehab? See the photo.
The fact that a PT told him to “never squat heavy again” was mind-blowing to me, especially since we know that squatting heavy and to full depth is actually protective to the knee joint long term.
The sad thing is – I hear stories like this all the time, especially amongst fitness athletes.
If you’ve been told a similar narrative, I beg you to reconsider your beliefs and the narratives you’ve been fed.
The body is resilient. If we approach rehab and performance safely and with logical progressions, the sky is the limit.
